How We Are Making a Difference

Strengthening Livelihoods & Expanding Opportunities
Across Belize, women, youth, and coastal families are gaining new skills, income streams, and leadership roles through seaweed farming, processing, guiding, entrepreneurship, and marine conservation. Paid training, stipends, and hands-on experience build confidence and financial independence, while member-led businesses continue to grow — with over nine micro-enterprises creating seaweed gels, skincare, beverages, nutraceuticals, and wellness products.

Building a Regenerative Seaweed Mariculture Industry
BWSFA cultivates two high-value species — Kappaphycus alvarezii and Eucheumatopsis isiformis — through environmentally friendly submerged farming systems. With multi-year support, we have strengthened farm capacity, implemented safe and traceable workflows, processed more than 25,000 lbs of wet seaweed, and advanced research on climate stressors and resilience. Our work supports food security, reduces pressure on overfishing, and contributes to Belize’s Blue Economy.

Innovating Value-Added Products & Caribbean Seaweed Co.™
From skincare to beverages and men’s grooming, BWSFA members are transforming seaweed into creative new products with market potential. Training, branding support, and improved packaging have accelerated this growth, and the Caribbean Seaweed Co.™ brand is positioning Belize as a leader in natural Caribbean seaweed products.

Leading the Way in Regenerative Tourism & Ocean Education
BWSFA proudly operates Belize’s first women-led Seaweed Farm Experience Tour, attracting visitors, students, influencers, and researchers. Members are now certified tour guides, offering immersive experiences, seaweed talks for resorts, and educational packages that connect marine conservation, culture, and community benefit. These tours directly support livelihoods and amplify Belize’s Blue Economy leadership.
